Ruscus aculeatus, also known as Butcher's broom, height approximately 30cm, 1-liter pot.

Ruscus aculeatus, better known as butcher's thorn, is an evergreen, slow-growing plant with a very distinctive appearance. This species is closely related to asparagus and is valued both for its ornamental value and its versatile uses. Due to its slow growth, the plant remains compact and stable in form for many years. The sturdy, deep green “leaves” are in fact flattened branches and feel stiff to the touch. In spring, small, inconspicuous white flowers appear in the middle of these leaf-like branches. Only female plants produce berries from these. These berries turn bright red in autumn and often remain on the plant for a long time, creating a striking winter scene. About the Ruscus aculeatus (butcher's broom) Butcher's broom is a dioecious plant, which means that there are male and female specimens. Only female plants bear berries. We supply these plants unsorted, making it impossible to determine in advance whether a plant will produce berries later. The young shoots of Ruscus aculeatus are edible and have a taste reminiscent of asparagus. In addition, the plant has a long history of use: brooms were formerly made from the branches, and the root is processed into extracts for traditional medicinal use. The berries are not edible. The plant grows very slowly and eventually reaches a height of approximately 80 to 100 cm and a similar width, often only after many years. This makes mouse-thorn suitable for long-term planting without it becoming dominant. Location and care Ruscus aculeatus is very tolerant regarding location and grows in both sun and (partial) shade. It is also undemanding regarding soil type and grows well in sandy and clay soil, provided it is well-draining. In open ground, the plant is fully winter-hardy and requires no protection. In a pot, it is important to prevent the pot from freezing completely.
